Video and Photo workshops under $1,000 in 2015

Last year, we published a list of great visual journalism workshops, and there are lots of lists like this out there. After looking through them, we’ve realized that the prices of these workshops are way too high for most of us journalists, especially for those who are freelancing or just starting out. So we narrowed it down; here’s a list of workshops under $1,000 (plus travel expenses) that we think are totally worth your hard-earned cash. All of the prices listed below do not include travel expenses or room and board unless they’re listed.

The Eddie Adams Workshop

This is one of the most prestigious workshops in the U.S., producing some notable names in the photography world. It lasts four days and brings top professional photographers together with 100 students who are chosen based on their portfolios, and who attend the workshop tuition-free. It’s extremely competitive, but absolutely worth applying to.

  • Application due: March 31, 2015
  • Application materials: 20-image portfolio
  • Workshop dates: From October 9 to October 12, 2015
  • Location: Jeffersonville, New York.
  • Cost: Tuition is free but room and board are a flat fee of $375.

The Missouri Photo Workshop

Each year this workshop takes place in a different small town in Missouri, where participants immerse themselves in the lives and stories of the inhabitants. Past faculty members have included photographers from National Geographic, the Washington Post, the LA Times, and more.

  • Application due: July 7th
  • Workshop dates: September
  • Location: Missouri
  • Application materials: A 20-image portfolio, a brief letter about why you want to participate, a résumé, and a reference letter from a professional journalist, photo editor, or educator.
  • Cost: $600, and several scholarships are available.

Four-Day Visual Storytelling Workshop with James Estrin at CUNY

This workshop with James Estrin, senior staff photographer at The New York Times and the co-editor of the Times’ photography blog, LENS, is very promising. Participants will develop a photo essay from beginning to end. Participants will have individual shooting assignments, daily group discussions and critiques and editing sessions. Guest speakers will include photographer Todd Heisler and Time Lightbox editor Olivier Laurent. Only 12 applicants will be selected.

  • Workshop dates: From April 6, 2015 to April 9, 2015
  • Location: New York City
  • Application materials: 20-image portfolio with one or two stories and a 100 word bio.
  • Cost: $950

Foundry Photojournalism Workshop

This is a great option for photographers at any level, and videographers who are beginners or intermediate. There several instructors who are leaders in the industry including Maggie Steber, Andrea Bruce, Ron Haviv and John Stanmeyer, among others. The location for the workshop changes every year, as do some of the instructors.

  • Medium: Most classes are strictly photography but there is usually at least one video or multimedia section.
  • Workshop dates: From July 19 to July 25th, 2015
  • Location: Bali, Indonesia
  • Application materials: None required except for scholarship applications.
  • Cost: $975 and $495 for regional participants

Mountain Workshops

This workshop takes participants to a different town in Kentucky each year in October. Four concurrent workshops are offered: photojournalism, picture editing, multimedia and time-lapse. Story researchers scour the county in advance of the workshop so participants can pick a story out of a hat and immediately start working on their assignment. This means less stress about finding a story.

  • Workshop dates: From October 20th to October 24th, 2015.
  • Location: Kentucky
  • Application materials: Photojournalism applicants submit a 10-picture portfolio and resume. Video Storytelling applicants submit a 10-picture portfolio, two video projects and resume. No portfolio is required for Picture Editing, Time-Lapse or Data Visualization applicants, only a resume is required.
  • Cost: $675-$875

The VII Evolution Tour at AbelCine

This is a great opportunity with some great photographers and videographers. A team from VII Photo with AbelCine is offering an “immersive, two-day educational program” that promises to examine “the technology, craft and business practices of today’s successful visual storytellers.” The event is structured as a combination of seminars, panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and networking and is for participants of all levels of experience and creative interests.” Plus there is a sweet student discount.

  • Workshop dates: February 28th and March 1st, 2015
  • Location: New York City
  • Cost: $25-$125 (email them for a student discount at training@abelcine.com)

MediaStorm

Mediastorm offers several Multimedia Workshops. They are generally pricey but they do have a few one-day workshops for $500. They offer a one-day workshop with founder Brian Storm on the business and art of digital storytelling, an Editing Workflow Workshop and an Advanced Post-Production workshop.

  • Medium: Multimedia and video.
  • Application due: Rolling applications throughout the year
  • Workshop dates: Multiple dates
  • Location: New York City
  • Application materials: You must fill out an application form with your experience and work examples.
  • Cost: $500-$1000 for a one-day workshop

Columbia Journalism School

The Continuing Education department of the Columbia Journalism School offers a few different workshops through out the year. Check out the site for different offerings and pricing. This mobile reporting workshop taught by Columbia Visuals founder Duy Linh Tu is a great example, but there are other available for video and photo storytelling and reporting.

  • Cost: $495

International Center of Photography

ICP offers dozens of workshops all year round, from one-day courses to travel programs. Visit their site and you’ll find an amazing variety.

  • Location: New York City
  • Cost: $100 to $1,000 and up.

Los Angeles Center of Photography

The Center has a nice variety of classes and workshops ranging from one-day trips to six-month classes. From street photography to portraiture, fashion photography to art photography, there’s something for everyone. The Center also offers courses in software, developing in a darkroom, and a limited number of courses covering multimedia and video. While the majority of the course offerings are located in L.A., a couple of workshops travel to other cities and countries as well.

Poynter Institute

The Poynter Institute offers training in a variety of topics, and their Multimedia and Visual Journalism offerings are actually affordable. Upcoming courses include a backpack and mobile journalism video workshop, and the Poynter Producer Project.

  • Location: St.Petersburg, Florida
  • Cost: $300-$750

Maine Media Workshops

This college is a nonprofit in the coastal town of Rockport, Maine that provides an educational environment for all types of creative professions, from writing and design, to photography, filmmaking and multimedia. It hosts over 300 workshops, including a wealth of interesting offerings for photo, video and multimedia journalists. Students are required to submit a portfolio to ensure the class will be on a similar technical and aesthetic level, but there are classes for a wide range of experiences.

  • Location: Rockport, Maine
  • Cost: $300 to $1,000 and up.

NPPA Workshops

The NPPA has several workshops available. Here are two:

1. News Video Workshop

This course intends to build the fundamental skills you need to tell strong, clear and compelling video news stories.

  • Workshop dates: From March 29 to April 3, 2015
  • Location: San Marcos, Texas
  • Application materials: Registration form.
  • Cost: $375 to $900

2. Advanced Storytelling Workshop

The program is designed for experienced TV and newspaper photojournalists, reporters and video journalists – anyone who tells stories with moving pictures, sound and words. Great emphasis is placed on developing a clear focus before shooting begins. Stories are produced under real-world deadlines.

  • Cost: $700 to $850
