8 Film Festivals for Students

Need a place to pitch your student short or feature-length documentary? There are hundreds of film festivals across the U.S., and a great number of them either specialize in student films and documentaries or have a student filmmaker category. In this post, we highlight eight upcoming film festivals with summer deadlines to help you get your work out there. No excuses – apply now!

Note: be sure to  go through the eligibility requirements carefully before sending in your application, or you risk disqualification.

New York City Short Film Festival (NYC Shorts)
City: New York, NY
Application Deadline: May 16, 2014
Relevant Categories: Documentary, Shorts, Student, LGBT
Submission Fees: $30-$35
Films must be under 20 minutes.

Temple University’s NextFrame International Student Film Festival
City: Philadelphia, PA
Application Deadline: June 1, 2014
Relevant Category: Documentary
Submission Fees: $25, free for international students
Films must have been created by undergraduate or graduate student filmmakers.

San Diego Film Festival
City: San Diego, CA
Application Deadline: June 1, 2014 is the late deadline.
Relevant Categories: Features, Documentary, Shorts, Student Films
Submission Fees: Check with the festival.
Films must have been completed after January 1, 2013. The festival also accepts submissions of rough cuts and works in progress.

New England Student Film Festival
City: Providence, RI
Application Deadline: June 15, 2014
Relevant Categories: Feature, Documentary, Short Subject
Submission Fee: $25
All applicants must be students at a New England institution of higher education, or a graduate from within the last two years.

Chicago International Film Festival
City: Chicago, IL
Application Deadline: June 20, 2014
Relevant Categories: Student Films, Documentary, Feature, Short Subject
Submission Fees: $20-$100
Only films completed after July 1, 2013 will be eligible.

Manhattan Short Film Festival
City: New York, NY
Application Deadline: July 31, 2014
Relevant Categories: Documentary, Student
Submission Fees: $35
Films must be no longer than 18 minutes.

Berkeley Video & Film Festival
City: Berkeley, CA
Application Deadline: August 10, 2014
Relevant Categories: Student Filmmaker, Documentary, Educational, Features, Shorts
Submission Fees: $15-$40
Films must have been produced in the 30 months leading up to the festival.

International Student Film Festival Hollywood
City: Los Angeles, CA
Application Deadline: August 15, 2014
Relevant Categories: Documentary
Submission Fees: $35-45
Films must have been made by current student filmmakers or by someone who was a student within the two years prior to the screening date.
